St Michael's church, Burwell

Grade I listed

The church dates from the early 12th century onwards, and is built from green sandstone with ashlar dressings and redbrick. The church was built over an older church, ancient Saxon pillars were exposed during repairs in 1985.

There is a western tower, nave with south porch and chancel.
The tower is early 16th century and the top was rebuilt in the late 18th century with brick. There are battlements with corner gargoyles. The underside of the tower roof space has three large wooden Angels carved in the 15th century.
It appears that the nave originally had a south aisle which has subsequently been demolished and the arcades filled in. The north wall of the nave is virtually windowless, and may have been adjacent to monastic buildings associated with the church.
The chancel dates from the 13th century, the east window was inserted in the 16th century. On the south side of the chancel is a late 15th century rectangular window.
The chancel arch is early 12th century, semicircular with moulded capitals, one with dancing stags. There is a fragment of 12th century wall painting on the east wall of the nave.
The font is octagonal with shields, and was the gift of Thomas Fitzwilliam in the 15th century.
There is a monument to Hugh Allington, died 1674, and another one to Matthew Dymoke, died 1792.

The church was made redundant in 1981 and is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Considerable restoration work has since been carried out.
