Lincoln County Hospital

Designed by Alexander Graham, Lincoln County Hospital was started with the foundation stone laid on 27th July 1876 by Earl Brownlow. The builders were Barnes and Wright of Lincoln and it was officially opened on 1st Oct. 1878 although the hospital was founded in 1768 in a rented house in St. Swithins. The initial hospital comprised of a five story admin block with two, two story wings for male and female patients. Hutton Ward was added by Lincoln architect William Watkins in 1884/5 to the north of the main buildings. A fever block was added in 1885 and an outpatients department in 1891 by William Watkins. The hospital continued to be modified and added to over the years, one of the largest being the multi-storey maternity unit in 1968 by Adams, Holden and Pearson. A Conservation Statement was prepared for the Health Authority in 2008 by Anderson and Glenn. Work to demolish the west wing started in January 2011 after being vacant for over 15 years.
