Former Even Swindon School, Hughes Street, Swindon :: Shared Description
Written by Brian Robert Marshall
The school was opened in 1880 as a primary school and extended in 1884 by the addition of further buildings to provide an infants’ school. It was extended again in 1895 to cope with overcrowding. In 2007 the school closed when a new school was opened nearby to replace it. The building has lain derelict and disused since then. Inevitably it attracted the more feral members of society and the building was subjected to an arson attack in February 2013. The damage caused together with the unsuitability of the building for non-educational purposes has led to the local authority owners deciding to demolish the buildings and clear the site. Although no decision has yet been made on the site’s future, the ‘preferred option’ is for it to be used for new housing. As of 19 December 2013 the site has almost been cleared.
