The First Church of Christ, Scientist stands, in the University area, on the corner of Rugby Road. It was built in 1936-7 to a design by Clough Williams-Ellis LinkExternal link LinkExternal link. More in keeping with the Mediterranean or (perhaps) California it contrasts with the surrounding area which is almost entirely red brick. A remarkable example of successful innovation in design. There is the following application for planning permission: “Z/2014/0579/F 01/05/2014 Christian Science Church 2-4 University Avenue Belfast BT7 1GY Internal alterations, external general building repairs and maintenance to include new boundary fencing, gates and pillars, maintenance vehicle access onto Fitzroy Avenue, general site maintenance works and formation of temporary parking area to north of site in a grassed (invisible) porous paving system (Amended plans and description)”.
