The Great Marquess at Glasgow Central :: Shared Description

The Great Marquess is one of The London and North Eastern Railway's (LNER) Class K4 locomotives. These 2-6-0 steam locomotives were built in Darlington in the late 1930s to a design by Nigel Gresley, specifically to tackle the steep grades of the West Highland Line.

Only six were built, of which The Great Marquess is the only survivor. Numbered 3442 by LNER, later renumbered 61994 by British Railways, she still carries the 65A shed plate, which identifies Eastfield in Glasgow as here home depot.

Despite "The Welsh Mountaineer" name board, she is actually hauling "The West Highlander Steam Express", a four day tour of the West Highlands, which started and finished at Preston. Seen here at Glasgow Central at the end of the first day's journey.
